Sold: my 4th-gen 4Runner. Lots of good ski trips and not enough good hiking trips under her belt. I’m enough of a sucker to be glad it’s going to a good home. Randomly, the first person who actually came to drive it (after a lot of out of state interest that would have required dealing remotely, shipping, etc.) turned out to be a friend’s coworker in the fire department (my dad was a firefighter too) who seems like a good dude. Thus: friends and family discount applied, and everybody goes home happy.

Kinja'd!!!

One of my dogs will miss it—she is smart enough to pay attention to what keys I pick up and what shoes I put on, and she loves the keys to the hike/park-mobile. I imagine she’ll quickly learn to love it when I grab the keys to the 5th-gen. The other one is actually smarter: she reserves judgment till we go to the front door and she sees which car we’re going in  and which dogs are invited.

Good truck. Hope the 5th-gen serves me as well and for longer.

The week where I was irrationally worried it would never sell and I’d be stuck with two 4Runners, one with a loan on it, felt...like I was not very smart.

I’ll make sure to never  tell you what price I let it go for when the right buyer showed up. Still a lot better than trading it in, though.

The new one is great in many ways but I do miss the V8 from time to time.

Nice! Always good to know it’s going to a good home.

I was tempted to go with a used GX460  for the V8. I just couldn’t pay the price for a low mileage GX though. It doesn’t help that I prefer the pre-facelift models, so finding a low mileage older GX was quite difficult.

I just sold my 4th gen as well ( https://overland.kinja.com/the-end-1837743759 ) and your picture reminded of yet another issue that popped up on sale day: the rear window failed to go down during the inspection. And of course a fuse blew or the glass position sensor tripped, or both, so the rear wiper appeared to not work as well...

Dude still bought the truck and I’m glad he did!

I saw your CL ad. I can guess what it eventually settled it. It’s all good. For whatever reason I’m unwilling to relinquish the SportBoi.

Right now I’m seeing GX 470s going for a bit less than 5th gen 4Runners with comparable age and miles. I’m not excited by the bigger hit in fuel economy with the V8 and full time 4wd, but whichever good example I find may get purchased now that I dented my GTI on a rough forest road.

Soooo, question: how many miles did u have on the old one? Bought a 1990 w 98000 on it in 1996, sold it w 281000 on it in 2015. Put 2 clutches in it, valve jobs left side twice. Owise, GREAT!

Motor on!!

I debated both and ultimately went new. Looking back, I probably should’ve saved some $$, gone with a Lexus,  and went used. I’m still quite happy with the 4Runner, but with my wife’s car now being paid off, I’m kicking myself a bit for having payments on the 4Runner....the Taco would’ve been paid off in about 6 months. I guess extending 12 months isn’t the end of the world.

I would happily go new and avoid the premium in the used market, except this will be a spare/toy vehicle, so I need to keep the cost low, and high miles are fine.

The car of day today, however, is a 2005 4Runner Sport V8 that was just refreshed, with 161k miles, and a reasonable seeming price. I’ve actually reached out to this seller, unlike my normal window-shopping restraint. I t is 2 hours drive away, though, which dampens my hope.

Hi rpm.

I have a 2005 4Runner myself. Love it. How many miles did u have on yours. I am reaching 397,487 original miles. Unfortunately the only thing that is causing issues is a cat converter. Everything else works and in great shape! Original everything no rebuilt, no no trans. And A/C is still blowing

I am waiting for a new body style 2021-22. I heard a interior (technology) change to the 20 20 models only.

Any recommendations on getting that cat fixed. Toyota wants 1600+. I’m trying to get Toyota to either buy the car off of me.. or get some publicity

Does anyone know what the highest mileage 4Runner that is out there. All original?

Wow, impressive mileage! I don’t have any experience with catalytic converter issues on these, but in general my recommendation would be to take it to a reputable independent shop—usually their hourly rates are significantly cheaper than the dealer’s. It seems to me that getting nearly 400,000 miles of use out of any car, or any part on a car before having to replace it , is pretty good!

It’s not entirely clear to me why you want Toyota to b uy the car from you....and what are you hoping to publicize?

There are one or two on this thread with close to 600k on the original engine . And I ’ve heard of others over 400k. Lots of 3rd gens that high too.
